On October 1, 1891, Stanford University opened its doors after six years of planning and building. In the early morning hours, construction workers were still preparing the Inner Quadrangle for the opening ceremonies. The great arch at the western end had been backed with panels of red and white cloth to form an alcove where the dignitaries would sit. Behind the stage was a life-size portrait of Leland Stanford, Jr., in whose memory the university was founded. About 2,000 seats, many of them sturdy classroom chairs, were set up in the 3-acre Quad, and they soon proved insufficient for the growing crowd. By midmorning, people were streaming across the brown fields on foot. Riding horses, carriages and farm wagons were hitched to every fence and at half past ten the special train from San Francisco came puffing almost to the university buildings on the temporary spur that had been used during construction. Just before 11 a.m., Leland and Jane Stanford mounted to the stage. As Mr. Stanford unfolded his manuscript and laid it on the large Bible that was open on the stand, Mrs. Stanford linked her left arm in his right and held her parasol to shelter him from the rays of the midday sun. He began in measured phrases: "In the few remarks I am about to make, I speak for Mrs. Stanford, as well as myself, for she has been my active and sympathetic coadjutor and is co-grantor with me in the endowment and establishment of this University..." What manner of people were this man and this woman, who had the intelligence, the means, the faith and the daring to plan a major university in Pacific soil, far from the nation's center of culture ? a university that broke from the classical tradition of higher learning?

THE ORGANIZATION'S MISSION IS TO PROMOTE ADVANCED EDUCATION THROUGH DIDACTIC COURSES AND CLINICAL TRAINING TO DENTAL HYGIENISTS PURSUING A BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE AND FOR LICENSED DENTISTS CURRENTLY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BUFFALO SCHOOL OF DENTAL MEDICINE IN ADVANCED EDUCATION PROGRAMS.

The College of New Jersey Foundation encourages and receives philanthropic support to expand access to and enhance the outstanding educational and community service opportunities provided to students at The College of New Jersey. The Foundation carries out its mission by establishing funds for student support, learning experiences, academic enrichment and capital improvement. The American Indian Association of Illinois provides a model for Indian community development.It is governed by people rooted in their tribal cultures, living in off-reservation communities, working to improve the lives of all Indian people. It provides the opportunity for every Native person to pursue education in a way that respects tribal culture and individual interests and needs. AIAI’s participants help build the Indian communities of the future. The mission of the American Indian Association of Illinois is to develop and implement educational opportunities for American Indian people and others who may benefit from such programs to help them build strong Native families and communities, which respect and acknowledge all tribal histories and cultures.

The JMU Foundation, first established as the Madison College Foundation in 1969, exists to "Promote the welfare, efficiency, service to the public and objectives of James Madison University and to encourage private gifts of money, securities, land or other property of whatever character for such purposes." During our 30 year history, we have played an important role in the university's dramatic growth from a state teachers college to a multipurpose university. The ability to purchase or receive property the university needs in a timely manner has made many of the buildings and facilities, essential to the JMU of today, possible.

The Foundation exists solely to assist, support and foster Virginia Commonwealth University in all proper ways that may from time to time be approved by the trustees of the Foundation with the guidance of the university.
